What do SPF and broad spectrum actually mean?
SPF, or sun protection factor, describes how much longer UVB-filtered skin takes to redden compared with unprotected skin under test conditions. An SPF 30 product filters about 96.7 percent of UVB when applied correctly; SPF 50 filters about 98 percent. The American Academy of Dermatology, in consumer guidance current as of 2024, recommends a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, a position echoed in National Cancer Institute consumer materials.

How much sunscreen is enough?
The reference dose used in testing is two milligrams per square centimeter, which for an average adult in swimwear works out to about one ounce, a full shot glass, for the whole body. The USPSTF, in its 2023 recommendation statement on behavioral counseling for skin cancer prevention, concluded with moderate certainty that counseling fair-skinned people aged 6 months to 24 years about sun-protective behavior has a small net benefit, and noted that evidence for adults over 24 was insufficient to estimate benefit, a limitation the panel attributed to sparse trial data rather than evidence of harm.

Who faces the highest skin cancer risk?
Risk is not distributed evenly, and knowing where a person sits on that map shapes how seriously to take protection. The National Cancer Institute lists the strongest factors: lighter skin that burns or freckles easily, blue or green eyes, naturally red or blond hair, a large number of moles, a family history of melanoma, a personal history of blistering sunburns, and any use of tanning beds. Does sunscreen use cause vitamin D deficiency?
The question comes up often, and the reviewed evidence suggests real-world sunscreen use does not meaningfully collapse vitamin D status. Are sunscreen ingredients safe?

Any sore that does not heal within a few weeks, a lesion that bleeds or crusts repeatedly, or a dark streak under a fingernail or toenail also warrants an appointment. People who have had one skin cancer are at elevated risk of another and are typically advised to arrange regular skin examinations.
